What is the Difference between Cleaning and Descaling?
Cleaning your coffee equipment removes the rancid oils that accumulate inside your machine from previously brewed coffee. Over time, this residue is responsible for making your coffee taste bad and for causing your machine to malfunction. Descaling your coffee equipment removes the mineral deposits that form in coffee and espresso equipment when water is heated. These lime deposits cause your machine to clog, which leads to slower brew times and bitter tasting coffee. In order to ensure great tasting coffee, it is important to clean and descale your coffee and espresso equipment on a regular basis.

I used a product but my machine still isn't working properly?
Problem: "My coffee tastes bad/funny." Usually, when coffee tastes bad, it needs to be cleaned. If you already used a cleaning product, the probable cause of poor tasting coffee is that you did not rinse properly. Rinsing your coffee machine is extremely important because it gets rid of residue that forms in your machine after cleaning.

Problem: "I used Cleancaf® Brand Cleaner and Descaler and my coffee still tastes bad/funny."
If you used Cleancaf® Brand Cleaner and Descaler and have rinsed at least three times with water and still think your coffee tastes funny, run a third batch with two tablespoons of white vinegar in four cups of water to neutralize any Cleancaf® Brand Cleaner and Descaler residue.

Problem: "I used Dezcal™ Activated Scale Remover and my coffee still tastes bad/funny."
Occasionally, Dezcal™ Activated Scale Remover dislodges a piece of calcium but doesn't dissolve it enough to fit through the tiny holes in your espresso machine's shower head. If this happens, the chip of scale can clog a hole and cause an uneven flow of water over your coffee. This can lead to over or under extraction and a bad taste. To fix this problem, follow the manufacturer instructions for removal of the upper shower screen on your home espresso machine. Rinse this off and make sure a small piece of scale isn't blocking your brew cycle. Be careful to turn off and cool the machine before touching as parts may be hot.

*Note: If you used Dezcal™ Activated Scale Remover and you are concerned with the taste of your coffee, run a batch of water with two tablespoons of dissolved baking soda.
